MicroStrategy's Bitcoin Strategy, Explained
In 2020 a business-software company started buying Bitcoin with its treasury. It kept going. Now renamed Strategy, it holds the largest corporate Bitcoin position in the world — a number that keeps climbing, so check current figures rather than trusting stale headlines.
The playbook
(1) Buy Bitcoin with treasury cash, (2) issue convertible notes and equity to buy more, (3) treat the holding as the company's primary asset. It converts a boring balance sheet into a leveraged Bitcoin proxy.
Why it matters to the market
MSTR trades like a Bitcoin amplifier — its premium to Bitcoin holdings has itself become a trading instrument. The premium/discount dynamics are worth understanding.
The risks, stated honestly
Leverage cuts both ways. In drawdowns, the structure amplifies losses the same way it amplifies gains. Anyone holding the stock is holding leveraged Bitcoin exposure, not a diversified software business.
What UK investors should take from it
Corporate treasury adoption is now a real trend (other public companies have followed). If you want direct exposure, the stock is one route; holding the asset itself is the other — with the usual custody caveats.
