Bitcoin Security Guide UK 2026 — Protect Your Keys, Seed Phrase & Wallet

Buying Bitcoin is step one. Keeping it safe is the hard part. Bitcoin has no customer support, no fraud department, no "reset password" button. If your keys are compromised, your Bitcoin is gone — permanently. This guide covers everything you need to do to keep your Bitcoin secure.

The 5 Rules of Bitcoin Security

1. Never store your seed phrase digitally. No photos, no cloud backup, no password manager file. Paper or metal only.
2. Never type your seed phrase into a website. No legitimate Bitcoin service will ever ask for it.
3. Use a hardware wallet for anything over £500.
4. Verify addresses on the hardware device screen before sending. Not on your computer. Not on your phone.
5. Don't keep all your Bitcoin in one place. Diversify across cold storage (hardware wallet), a small hot wallet for spending, and a backup.

Seed Phrase Storage

Your seed phrase (24 words) IS your Bitcoin. Whoever has the seed phrase has the Bitcoin. Storage options:

Paper (free) — Write your seed phrase on paper. Store in a safe or safe deposit box. Risk: fire, water, loss.

Metal plate (£40-150) — Stamp or engrave your seed phrase onto metal. Immune to fire and water. Best option: Cryptosteel, Billfodl, or a DIY stainless steel plate.

Split storage — Divide your seed phrase into 2-3 parts stored in different locations. Use Shamir Backup (Trezor) or a manual split. No single location has the full phrase.

Hardware Wallet Security

• Buy directly from the manufacturer. Never buy a second-hand hardware wallet. Never buy from eBay.
• Initialize the device yourself. Generate a new seed phrase on first use.
• Verify the device's authenticity using the manufacturer's official app.
• Update firmware when prompted — updates include security patches.
• Use a passphrase (25th word) for an additional layer of security. This creates a hidden wallet that can't be accessed without the passphrase.

Phishing and Scam Protection

• Never click links in emails about Bitcoin. Go directly to the service's website by typing the URL.
• Verify Bitcoin addresses on the hardware device screen before sending large amounts.
• Be wary of "giveaway" scams. No one is giving away free Bitcoin.
• Don't trust "support" agents who DM you on Telegram, Twitter, or Discord.
• Use a dedicated email address for crypto services. Don't use your personal email.

Multi-Signature (Advanced)

Multi-signature (multisig) requires multiple keys to authorize a transaction. For example, a 2-of-3 setup means you need 2 out of 3 keys to spend. This means a single compromised key can't drain your Bitcoin.

Setup: Use Sparrow Wallet or Electrum to create a multisig wallet. Store the keys on different hardware wallets in different locations.

Best for: Holdings over £10,000. The extra security is worth the complexity.

What to Do If You're Compromised

If you suspect your seed phrase has been seen by someone else:

1. Immediately move your Bitcoin to a new wallet with a fresh seed phrase
2. Use a hardware wallet for the new wallet
3. Never reuse the compromised seed phrase

If your hardware wallet is lost or stolen:

1. Don't panic — the thief can't access your Bitcoin without your PIN
2. Get a new hardware wallet
3. Restore using your seed phrase (which you safely stored on metal or paper)
4. Move your Bitcoin to a new wallet with a fresh seed phrase (in case the device was targeted)
